Phil Turner

Phil Turner is one of the 18 contestants battling it out for investment from Lord Alan Sugar in The Apprentice.

But what is his entrepreneurial background?

Who is Phil Turner?

Phil Turner is the owner of his family business, Turner’s Pies.

Originally set up by his grandparents in 1933, Turner took control of the firm in 2009 along with his two older brothers when he was just 21 years old.

Since then he has turned the pie business into a seven-figure profitable business. It now has five shops in the UK and the company’s pies are sold in Harrods of London’s world-famous food halls.

As well as the five shops, Turner’s Pies also has a Pies by Post service, shipping their products across the country.

Despite the huge success the company has had over the past 14 years, Turner says that he’s repeatedly had setbacks in business, making mistakes before then correcting himself.

“Building my business over the years is a succession of failures,” he explained.

“Almost everything I’ve done for the first time failed in one way or another.

“I live by the motto ‘we win or we learn’.

“There’s no failure that I’ve encountered in business or life that hasn’t been necessary for growth. Failure is necessary for success.”

In fact, business accounts show that Turner’s Pies took another setback in 2023.

After recording £117,000 in profit for 2022, over the last year it recorded a £90,000 loss.

It made a £1.66million gross profit but administration costs for its 46 staff were £1.62million, with a further £79,000 in distribution costs on top.
