The Brit was born in Wiltshire on September 8, 1991 and grew up in the county alongside his sister, Zoe, who is also a YouTuber and posts content under the name “Zoella“.
Sugg was 20 years old when he first started making and sharing videos online. Having worked as a roof thatcher after leaving school at 18, he set up a YouTube account in 2011 under the name “ThatcherJoe”.

His content mainly consisted of peaks and impressions, and viral internet challenges. With YouTube influencers still a relatively new phenomenon at the time, the young Brit quickly saw his popularity online grow.
Sugg would also regularly appear on his sister’s video channel as well as those of other popular YouTubers, helping to spread the word of his own account.
Sugg’s YouTube channel now has 8 million subscribers worldwide.
Seeing the success within his first couple of years creating videos, in 2013 Sugg set up a second YouTube channel in which he blogged about his life. A year later in 2014 he also created a YouTube gaming channel “ThatcherJoeGames”.
Off the back of his YouTube success, the young content maker managed to branch out into different, more mainstream areas of entertainment. He started appearing in cameo roles on TV. Shows and movies, and also sung on charity music releases.
His most high profile role came in 2018 when he became the first social media star to be signed up to appear on the UK BBC show Strictly Come Dancing.
Paired with professional dancer Dianne Buswell, Sugg competed in the weekly aired competition show. The couple made it to the final, finishing as runners-up.
His role on Strictly saw him land further roles on stage, performing in the West End in 2019 in the musical Waitress.
